Southwest Georgia Tornado Outbreak

Camilla, Georgia |
Introduction
On the night of February 13th, 2000 continuing to the early hours of
February 14th, the southeast was under the gun with severe weather. Strong
winds, heavy wind, hail, lightning, and tornadoes wrecked havoc during the
late evening and early morning hours. These were all part of an advancing
cold front that was moving deep into the South. One small area in
Southwest Georgia experienced one of the worst things that you can imagine
- tornadoes. By having these tornadoes occur at night, it created
conditions that were quite dangerous for anyone in the area. The extreme
Southwest corner of the Georgia had three tornadoes of F3 damage and one
tornado of F2 damage over the course of just a few hours. This paper will
deal with all of the events leading up to the outbreak. We will be
discussing the surface and upper air synoptic and mesoscale data, look at
what the models were forecasting, focus on the supercells that spun these
four tornadoes, and also evaluate the efforts of both the SPC and the
Tallahassee NWS forecasting office.
